Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month

At Sir Jonathan Girls’ College, we are committed to promoting and celebrating equality, diversity and inclusion within our school.

February is recognised as LGBTQ+ History Month and the theme for 2023 is ‘Behind the Lens’. This years’ theme celebrates the hard work and contributions made by members of the LGBTQ+ community to the production of film and cinema from ‘Behind the Lens’.

Our student diversity ambassadors have been holding assemblies to recognise and celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, focusing specifically on LGBTQ+ fashion designers whose pieces often challenge and breakdown gender stereotypes. Our students discussed icons such as Harry Styles and Cara Delevingne who often wear clothing by the fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who challenges the gender stereotypes of what ‘masculinity’ and ‘femininity’ should look like.

They also discussed famous singers who represent the LGBTQ+ community such as Sam Smith, who came out as gender queer and then non-binary in 2019 and Becky Hill who came out as queer in 2021.

The assemblies helped to highlight to students the important roles that the LGBTQ+ community play in the world of the media and presented them with a variety of relatable role models. Our students were also made aware of various support networks available to them via the Barnados charity and The Proud Trust

Our ambassadors wanted to show that although students may not be aware, members of the LGBTQ+ are a big part of the industry ‘behind the lens’.
