Eco efforts celebrated
We are incredibly proud of our wonderful Eco Club, whose efforts to promoting ecological excellence at our school have once again been recognised with the Eco Schools Green Flag with Merit.Throughout the previous academic year, the club focused on three eco categories:
- School grounds
- Healthy living
- Waste
School grounds
For the school grounds, students built a bug hotel in the front garden and installed bird boxes to encourage wildlife. They also carried out litter picks, cleaned the college pond and planted a colourful mix of flowers and bulbs to brighten the space and support pollinators.
The orchard has also continued to flourish. With nine fruit trees and several raised beds, the area is thriving and has produced a good amount of fruit.
Healthy living
In the healthy living category, the group took part in the Leicester ‘Grow Your Own Grub’ competition. This year’s challenge asked schools to choose a country and design a healthy menu inspired by its cuisine. Our students chose Germany and created a delicious menu using ingredients they grew themselves in a wheelbarrow. They served up Vegan Goulash soup, Vegetable Patties with Potato Salad and a Red Berry Fruit Compote.
Waste
For the waste category, the group joined the national Good Life Schools programme, which encourages students to think critically about consumerism and waste. Our team chose to focus on the beauty industry and set up a collection point in school where beauty packaging can be recycled. It’s a thoughtful and relevant initiative that’s already making an impact.
Alongside these projects, the club attended the Leicester Eco-Schools Celebration event, where they spoke to judges about their work. Their efforts were met with fantastic feedback and they were awarded the special Eco Factor award, along with a £50 prize, a brilliant achievement and a testament to their hard work.
This accolade emphasises how our school is making a real difference through environmental action and we can’t wait to see how the Eco Club continue their outstanding work this academic year!
